Emotional Intelligence and Leadership

Research continues to show us that successful leaders have a high Emotional Intelligence (EI). 

High EI enables leaders to


Low EI can cause leaders to

  • create a compelling vision
  • inspire, engage and bring people with them
  • build lasting relationships
  • demonstrate personal resilience
  • navigate transformation and change with confidence and optimism.

These leaders understand their emotional barometer and that of others.  Because they are in tune with their own emotions and those of others they come across as consistent and authentic, building a climate of trust and high performance. These leaders tend to be better able to balance their personal and professional lives.

  • come across as inconsistent, impacting on their authenticity, trust and engagement
  • rely on a command and control style of leadership or on micromanaging - demotivating people
  • feel detached from their own sense of vision and purpose, impacting confidence and resilience.

Through coaching and workshops I help leaders and teams develop their Emotional Quotient (EQ) - crucial for leadership success.

Developing your EI

A challenge when developing your EI is knowing what it is that isn’t working for you, identifying what you need to develop and working out how to do it. 

EI isn’t just one thing. It’s a number of different attributes that collectively contribute to your overall EQ.

I use the market leading Reuven Bar-On EQ diagnostic tool to help people understand their own EQ. This on-line diagnostic can be carried out as a personal inventory or as 360 feedback to create a more powerful insight. This is the starting point. Feedback on your EQ is provided through a 1:1 debriefing session. Further coaching or development workshops are then tailored to address areas of development, over use or imbalance. The Reuven Bar-On tool can also be used to help build resilience, understand repsonses to stress, smooth out 'rough edges' in leadership styles and build stronger self awareness and interpersonal relationships.

I am also accredited in the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI). ESCI is a result of a collaboration between the Hay Group and the leading thinkers in EI, Richard Boyatzis and Daniel Goleman. 

Emotional Intelligence for teams

Understanding a teams' collective EI will help the team to value differences, build strong collaborative relationships, address conflict constructively, build collective confidence, handle pressure more effectively and make better decisions.

The first step is to use the EQ tool to understand each individual team members' EQ.  1:1 debrief sessions provide individual feedback. Group feedback helps the team to understand collective strengths and weaknesses and workshops are tailored to address areas of development in the context of building a high performance team.

This kind of development is ideal for new leadership teams, new management teams and teams that are not working together as effectively as they could. It helps to identify key challenges in problem solving, decision making, empathy, relationships, stress tolerance, flexibility and optimism – all of which impact team success and performance.
